My early experience is in Elementary education. I earned a Master’s degree in Reading education while working. My career began at a small private school, and then at a prestigious, college-prep, private school here in Maryland.
I held positions teaching first and third grades, teaching multiple reading groups, as well as teaching all the other subjects. I organized and administered the summer program at the school.
After a time, I was hired by one of the best private schools in the Washington, D.C. area. I taught Language Arts in a middle school setting. I had the opportunity to focus on Reading, Writing, organization and especially Study Skills for older children. One of my strengths in this environment is to help students tackle the combined reading and writing skills necessary to read their textbooks independently. I worked with my classes to strengthen their writing skills for a variety of tasks. They learned how to better answer chapter questions in their textbooks, how to research and write papers, as well as how to appreciate Creative Writing. These study skills were critical tools for everyday study and homework. My goal became teaching my students how to learn, not just to teach them facts.
